A Brief History of Midway

In the early twentieth century there was much expansion in Walton-on-Thames between the town centre and the Halfway.  It was at this time that the pattern of streets began to take on the appearance that we are familiar with today and Midway was first laid out as a residential road.  By 1912 Midway had nine properties.  Sir Dudley Pound, later Admiral of the Fleet, lived in Midway with his wife at about this time.

The Midway Residents’ Association was formed in 1970 from what was originally known as the ‘Road Fund’.  Its initial purpose was to organise road resurfacing, but it later took in road lighting, surface water drainage, traffic control, amenity issues and general maintenance.

In 1977 Midway was given the official status of an ‘Unadopted Road’ by Elmbridge Borough Council, and was therefore not repairable at public expense.

In 1988 the MRA sought clarification of the road status from Mrs Sheila Cameron QC; her opinion was to the effect that Midway is a private road, with access and passage along it being through a system of mutual easements being granted by the Owners of the properties of Midway.

The present position is that Owners of Midway properties:

  • are all members of the Midway Residents' Association
  • collectively own the road
  • form a voluntary Committee, who all offer their services voluntarily
